PLAN is the first part of my 5-step “Operations Methodology”.
By now you probably know that I’m a Strategic Bookkeeper. Well, the actions we take from the numbers are around one of these 5 Operational areas.
Think about it. Didn’t hit your revenue target? Then you’ll take action around “Marketing”. And so on. But every action should start with some form of planning. Even if it’s just simple pen-to-paper planning.
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the ax.” Abraham Lincoln.
In everything I do, I’m planning. Infact, I’m like this in my business and my personal life. And I don’t mean it’s always formal grand plans. Infact, I’m a very spontaneous person & I’m not particularly fussed on routine. But basic planning makes things easier to get done. A habit my 10 year old son has picked up which is quite entertaining (think drawing in a notebook what his day will look like).
My top planning tips are :
- Ensure you have a basic Game Plan, like the template we’ve included here
- That will give you a good base of actions for your big picture plans
- Set goals so that your actions come from you goals, this will help with planning
- Don’t just “do things”, plan them. Spend a little time thinking about or looking at your “bigger picture” and asking yourself some questions
- Use a pen and paper or whiteboard or tech tools like asana
If you haven’t done so yet, I’d encourage you to take our Thriving Lifestyle Business Scorecard to see how you measure up in all 5 steps.
